Hi P%26amp;DNewt;
There are some car rental companies that will not permit their cars out of the state, or charge a premium if they do.
The cost of one-way rentals are much higher than a regular rental due to the drop-fees charged, as the vehicle must somehow be returned to the point of origin, towed if necessary.
The most direct route to the Flint Michigan area is through Canada. The distance is approx. 261 miles / 421 km, about a 4½ hour drive without any traffic delays, breaks, etc. or allowing time to clear Customs.
If you do choose to drive through Canada;
There are some US car rental companies that will not permit their cars out of the country, or may charge a premium if they do. Most of the larger rental companies will allow cross border travel. Ensure that the car rental company notes on the rental agreement that they authorize you to take the car into Canada. You may be asked by Customs when entering Canada, or when re-entering the US, for this documentation.
If you stay within the US, the drive is approx. 442 miles / 711 km, about a 7 hour drive without any traffic delays, breaks, etc.
On the rare occasion that I need to rent a car I use Avis or Budget. You will need to use a larger company, who has locations in both Buffalo NY and Flint MI.
Best Regards

From Buffalo Airport, Avis, Alamo, National and Hertz allow one way from BUF to many cities. Enterprise, and Budget do not. Use the companies websites or 1-800 numbers to get quotes....
