Hi,
we%26#39;re travelling to New York in September for 3 days. We plan to walk a lot to see the sites.
Please can somebody recommend (from personal experience) a cheap, characterful, children friendly hotel or bed and breakfast?
Must be:
cheap (we%26#39;re from South Africa)
safe walking distance from central park and all the sites
child friendly :)
Thank you!
Child Friendly, Charming and Cheap
Firstly, walking distance from Central Park and all the sites isn%26#39;t possible. The sites are spread out all over Manhattan. You can easily get to them using the subway.
What are your dates (prices fluctuate, even within the same week) and what is your nightly budget (cheap means different things to different people)?
Anywhere you stay in Manhattan is going to be safe, so don%26#39;t worry about that. You%26#39;ll be fine. It%26#39;s a bustling city and well lit - even at night there are heaps of people around.

What does that mean?
NYC is not a theme park - the sites are scattered over 5 boroughs.
So why does being from South Africa equate to cheap?
Just asking.
If you have checked FAQ%26#39;s or hotel informatin on this site you will have some idea as to what hotels cost - the closer to midtown, the more expensive. We usually stay in the 30%26#39;s - paying anywhere from $99-250/night depending on season for a room per night plus taxex/fees.
NYC is an expensive city - you certainly can get along cheaply - but I dare say the City in general will be more expensive than you%26#39;ve been accustomed.
NYC is roughly 300 Sq Miles (780 Sq Km) and sites are locates all over it, so wakling to %26#39;all the sites%26#39; is not possible in 3 days. Fortunately we have a great mass transit system you can use for $7.50 a day (current cost, price will most likely be higher in September but under $10 per person)
Prices will be higher once school starts in september, but if you give us your dates and nightly budget you will get some help.
Well Poppa, being from S.A means the exchange rate is very bad. i.e 15 (sometimes 20) to 1 not in their favour. So everything is much much more expensive.
Hence trying to save a few pennies here and there will allow for more freedom in other areas...
If you%26#39;re coming before Sept. 7, you have a good chance of finding some good hotel prices. After Sept. 7 which is our bank holiday Labor Day, prices go up dramatically. I fear our idea of ';cheap'; and yours may not be the same. ;) How many children are there (ie how many beds do you need) and what would you LIKE to spend per night in dollars?
