Best places for a unique dinner experience

Not your typical Italian restaurant...something different and unique from what you could find anywhere else. Any ideas?

Best places for a unique dinner experience

If it has to be an Italian place, then most any random Italian restaurant in NYC will be diff from what you ordinarily find in the rest of the USA. Simply avoid Olive Garden and you%26#39;re good to go.

;o)

Actually, yours is a very popular question. In our FAQ sticky at the top of this forum is this collection of our fave Italian restaurants:

What%26#39;s your price range?

For unique, how about:

Do you mean no Italian places? Or inventive Italian places?

If there%26#39;s no price limit, Babbo is probably the most ';different'; of the high-end Italian places, serving dishes like lamb%26#39;s brain francobolli, pig foot Milanese, and fennel sweetbreads.

In a more moderate price range, Perbacco is doing some inventive dishes, especially the antipasti:

I Trulli is one of the few Apulian restaurants I can think of in the US:

If you want something quick and to go, you might try the porchetta sandwich (not the most inventive thing in the world, but not all that common) at Porchetta:

If you don%26#39;t want Italian at all, I agree with Kate%26#39;s suggestion of wd-50 and will add

Degustation:

Momofuku Ko or Momofuku Ssam (the former is a very difficult reservation):

Slightly less inventive, but unusual for most Americans is the offal-heavy tapas menu at Casa Mono:

There%26#39;s loads of unusual (relative to the rest of the US) ethnic food here from Turkish to Ethiopian. menupages.com

will give you an idea.

I%26#39;m sorry...I meant that I wanted unique restaurants with different types of food. For example, in Fort Myers I had my first Chicago dog. A hot dog with celery salt, tomatoes, onion, a dill pickle spear and jalapenos. Mmmm...so different and yummy. That%26#39;s what I mean by unique foods that are a must try.

I don%26#39;t think that many people would consider a hot dog in any form to be ';different.'; What do you typically eat?

Had a wonderful evening at L%26#39;Artusi in the West Village a month or so ago.....very nice, business dress, reservations required or an hour or so wait.....excellent ambiance for a romantic evening yet bubbling with life. Sat at the bar....great selection of wine, cheese %26amp; dessert, not to mention the entrees.....expensive but a very nice experience for Italian/French food. Highly romantic....especially with the right person ;^D

I like the look of I Trulli. And it%26#39;s good for groups. Maybe our crew will go there. Haven%26#39;t made a reservation yet.
