First tourist trip to New York and Washington

Hi there I require some guidance please.

I am traveling to Pittsburg for a conference in June flying into JFK,hire a car and drive to Pittsburg (I am stopping off on the way),then back to Washington for 3 days, then 4/5 days in New York City and then fly out of Newark.

After doing the sights in Washington (any suggestions on where to stay and what to see for my first vist) I will be then driving to NYC.

1/Should I get rid of the car when I get into NYC and if so what is best way to get back to Newark for an early am flight with 3/4 large bags? Hotel at the airport?

2/I am told I do not need a car to cover the main tourist sights and see a couple of shows/visit some bars etc

3/Is the Times Square area the best place to stay to cover the sightseeing and if the suggestion is do not need a car can most of the popular sights be covered by the metro?

We stayed at a very nice Holiday Inn in DC but not quite sure which one it was. I understand Georgetown is a nice area and the Hampton Inn is also a nice hotel chain in the US.

You may want to go to a DC forum as I am not an expert on DC but popular attractions are the Washington Monument, Capitol Building, Smithsonian, Lincoln and Jefferson Memorial. Arlington National Cemetery can be worth visiting to.

I do not recommend having a car in New York City. Some hotels around Times Square or a bit north that may be good are the Hampton Inn, Warwick, or New York Hilton.

So much to see in NYC. We saw Mama Mia and Mary Poppins on Broadway recently and both are great. There are so many restaurants in the theater district. If you like Brazilian food, we like Brazil Brazil on 46th Street. www.menupages.com can give you more ideas on restaurants. If you like Italian food, we like Bella Cucina on 87th and Lexington and Gene%26#39;s on 11th and 6th. For Chinese food we like Hunan Balcony on 98th and Broadway.

The Comedy Cellar is a great comedy club in Greenwich Village, a fun place to visit. You may want to take the bus tour or the Circle Line boat tour.

You may want to check with Super Shuttle. They may be able to take you from the hotel to Newark Airport.
