travel advice

I am coming to New York next Friday arriving via JFK, are the taxi prices $45 if I just pick one up at the airport or do I need to book one for this price.

Bus tours, helicopters tours any advice on these and can you go up the statue of liberty.

Any other advice on this city would be appreciated.

Thanks.

Get your Yellow Cab from the queue/dispatcher at the airport - no need to pre-book a cab.

A yellow NY cab has a fixed rate of $45 plus toll and tip from JFK. Just get it from the taxi stand outside your terminal. DO NOT accept a ride from anyone else - there will be people offering you all sorts of offers as you walk to the cab rank - just say no. They are often unlicensed and scam artists (ie. charge $100 after they say they%26#39;ll charge you $30, not give you your luggage until you pay the $100, etc.)

On Board Tours and Real New York tours are well regarded and get good reviews. I don%26#39;t recommend the HOHO bus tours as they take forever to get around. Subway and walking are your best transportation options.

You can visit the S of L through www.statuecruises.com - to enter the Statue you must obtain a monument pass, which are limited in number. I therefore recommend you book it before you come, online. The Statue has a small but very worthwhile musuem in it about the building of the Statue. Since 9/11, you are no longer able to go as high as her crown, but you can reach the top of the pedestal on which she stands.

Visiting the S of L and Ellis Island (the same boat goes to both) is a time consuming process, so if you%26#39;re here for a short time I don%26#39;t recommend it. With security lines etc, it takes half a day to do it all.

If you%26#39;re here for a short time, you can get a view of the Statue and the city skyline using the free Staten Island Ferry, or book a Circle Line or NY Waterways cruise.

Thanks for your reply, if I book a monument pass will it still take a half day for the tour and will the $20 for the tour and audio tour cover the whole cost. The $20 states for 2 islands, however I just want to visit the statue of liberty. can i just reserve a momument pass for the statue of liberty and not ellis island. Thanks.

That cost is the cost of the ferry. As the S of L and Ellis Island are run by the National Park Service, both are free to visit. But the ferry operator charges to take you over there.

The ferry stops at Liberty Island first. When you get back on the ferry after visiting, simply don%26#39;t get off when it stops at Ellis and head back to Manhattan.

If you get the first Monument Pass of the day (9am or 10am), you can be back in Manhattan by 12pm. Just make sure you are at the ferry 45 minutes before it leaves, to allow for security.
