Unique foods that are a must try in NYC

Looking for unique restaurants with different types of food. For example, in Fort Myers I had my first Chicago dog. A hot dog with celery salt, tomatoes, onion, a dill pickle spear and jalapenos. Mmmm...so different and yummy. That%26#39;s what I mean by unique foods that are a must try.

Any suggestions?

There are myriads of threads on this topic. Do a search for %26#39;unique food%26#39; or %26#39;NYC food%26#39; and you%26#39;ll get some good thread links.

As they say, third times a charm!

We provided you with links to great threads on this very topic in one of your other posts.

In that thread and sub-threads, you%26#39;ll probably find foods and words that you won%26#39;t recognize.

Fear not! Here are some popular threads demystifyuing and explaining the secrets of the knish, the egg cream, the bialy, chopped liver, Cel-ray soda, and the Oprah-endorsed Forzen Hot Chocolate.

I%26#39;d also liek to remind you and others reading this thread that

1. There are NO FREE REFILLS ON SODA OR ICED TEA in NYC restaurants here.

(The only ones doing this now are chain restaurants that cater to tourists.)

2. You usaully get unlimited hot coffe and tea at most diners, coffee shops and mid-level restaurants.

3. Our tap water is naturally healthy and tastes great.

*** Mmmm...so different and yummy. That%26#39;s what I mean by unique foods that are a must try. ***

Ah .... so are we going for %26#39;odd%26#39; or %26#39;potentially gross%26#39; ..... but very yummy! Well %26#39;kuaitiao neua tok%26#39; is a Thai beef noodle soup dish that is made with very tender beef cubes, coriander, anise and ..... cow%26#39;s blood.

Sounds gross but is actually very good. So when was the last time you had %26#39;cows blood%26#39; in your soup up there in Maine ..... and enjoyed it?

http://www.astray.com/recipes/?show=Kuaitiao%20neua%20(beef%20noodle%20soup)

You can get kuaitiao neua tok in some of the Thai places in Elmhurst Queens like %26#39;Ploy Thai%26#39; or %26#39;Nusara%26#39; or %26#39;Sripraphi%26#39; that have authentic Thai food on the menu. Actually, you can just about tell if a Thai restaurant in NYC is intended for Americans (%26#39;falang%26#39;) or Thai people almost solely based on whether %26#39;kuaitiao neua%26#39; is on the menu or not. But for pete%26#39;s sake will everyone PLEASE STOP ORDERING PAD THAI !!!!!!

I gather that the fact that you first had a Chicago dog in Florida means that you%26#39;re interested in things that are easy to find in NYC but less common in many other places in the US, in addition to things that are closely associated with NYC (like knishes). So in addition to the great links QB gave you (and the links on your other thread), you might try:

Falafel is pretty common everywhere these days, I suppose, but the three kinds at Taim are terrific:

If you%26#39;re into offal, bone marrow is currently enjoying a moment in the sun here:

and a good place to have some without investing a lot of money in a full meal is Casa Mono:

Also in the offal camp (and v. New York) is the tongue sandwich at 2nd Avenue Deli:

Say, did anyone see that Einat Admony, the owner of Taim, won her battle on ';Chopped'; on the Food Network? Yay! Or should I say, mazel tov!
