Hello... I love great coffee... I hate Starbucks crap... is NYC big on quality coffee? In Italy I always go for macciato espresso, in Melbourne Australia the cafe lattes by the Italians are fabulous... so where to look for great coffee away from the diners and the mass chains? I am staying in the area very close to the Empire State Building... Cheers for any input...
coffee- the ins and outs of GREAT coffee in NYC?
You do realize, don%26#39;t you, that diners (which in NYC are commonly called ';coffe shops';, but should not be confused with things that look like Starbucks) are not chains, but tend to be individually owned restaurants?

Here is one of many previous threads on this question, with numerous suggestions:

You%26#39;ll notice that the link I just gave you also include a website devoted entirely to coffee in NYC. Check out the resources there.

Yes, the places on the links I gave you are what you are looking for.
Actually, there are a couple of places near the ESB that claim
';World%26#39;s Best Coffee'; - feel free to go in and congratulate them on that award!
Keepinitreal,
While I know it%26#39;s only coffee, your last comment was a bit sweeping! And no, I%26#39;m not English!
From what you say, you%26#39;re probably going to hate the coffee in NY. Coffee shop coffee is clearly beneath your dignity and Starbucks really dominates the specialized coffee places.
You may be able to find some good coffee in Little Italy or in the older Italian bakeries in the Village, but by the time you find these you will be morose. Just try to be less of a coffee snob and go with the flow.
erikH: striving for mediocrity is not what life is about... its about the simple pleasures... and good honest coffee is like a good New Zealand sauvignon blanc... irresistable... Starbucks is like 2 buck chuck... forgettable... my palate has advanced since my college days... thanks for your input...
The majority of decent coffee bars are concentrated downtown.....unfortunately for you! Nevertheless, here are some suggestions:

You%26#39;ll see a few of the same places popping up on every list -- a good sign.
The area close to the ESB is a culinary desert, and the only thing I eat around there is Kosher at Mendy%26#39;s and Korean, neither really coffee cuisine. You probably could find a decent cup of coffee on Park Ave. South nearby. If you are willing to take a subway ride, go to Gorilla Coffee, 97 5th Ave., Brooklyn. That%26#39;s first rate coffee and Park Slope is a great neighborhood worth visiting in its own right.
