We%26#39;ll be in NYC from June 22nd to July 6th. Are the kids still in school at that time or will they be on summer holiday by then?
Thanks.
School Summer Holidays
June 26th is the last day of instruction for NYC public school students.
School Summer Holidays
Crans is correct in what she says but don%26#39;t think that the streets will be kid-free prior to the 26th.
a. the High Schools have regents ( exams) the last week, so the kids are not on a regular schedule and no regent, no schoola and if you last regent is over--you are out having fun.
b. Neighboring school districts usually get out earlier ( NYC is the system that keeps on going and going and going) So, you WILL have their students!
c. Schools all over the US have different schedules so many people with kids will be visiting. ( i have teacher friends who get out the end of May)
OMG!! JUNE 26th?!?!? At this point I%26#39;m wondering if I can make it to May 26th. When does school start???
Teacher--New York is on a traditional school schedule, so classes begin after Labor Day (September 2nd, this past year). This year%26#39;s calendar:

Half of Team Crans if from the Midwest, so we%26#39;re familiar with the start-on-August-10th culture that exists in some places. Such a thing would be absolute sacrilege here :)
Thanks Crans!! :D I%26#39;m looking forward to looking at the NYC calendar and seeing how it compares to my Texas one.
KIds start the day after Labor Day. Teachers start the Thursday BEFORE!! Teachers and kids generally go to all but the last 2 work days in June. ( although in 2010 they tweaked it) Sometimes, when Labor Day is early we are starting in August. ( and yup--I am a teacher too)
Crans, ';Half of Team Crans if from the Midwest, so we%26#39;re familiar with the start-on-August-10th culture that exists in some places. Such a thing would be absolute sacrilege here :)';
It may be sacrilege but there are a huge number of people who yearly give the ';we are not an agricultural society any more'; rant. Of course they forget that we are not an airconditioned school building system either. Yup--you got it --I do not know the numbers but it is more than half of NYC schools do NOT have a/c. And many that do only have it it some rooms. In early Sept. and late June my building has hit 97 degrees. ( inside)
I can%26#39;t even imagine trying to teach without A/C Rdglady! Bless Y%26#39;all%26#39;s heart!! How do you keep from melting?? We used to start mid-August but the legislature made a law 2 years ago that says we can%26#39;t start before the 3rd Monday in August. (Texas tourism and their lobby played a big part in that decision.) However last year we had to start TEN days before the kids. It was one boring meeting after another. %26lt;%26lt;zzzzzz%26gt;%26gt;
