the distance between?

Good afternoon all, I am wondering about walking distances in reality as compared to a map. I will be staying at the Doubletree at Lexington and 51st and am curious if say, Central Park %26amp; the Theater District can be walked in a relatively short time. On the street maps they look do-able but are NYC blocks huge? I ask because I was recently in Las Vegas and things that looked like a 5-10 minute walk on a map would actually take 40 minutes.... I am expecting to walk a lot anyway but just want to be a bit prepared with subway directions where I might need them. Thanks! Carol

www.hopstop.com will estimate walking times for you.

As a general rule, it takes 1 minute to walk 1 north-south block. 2.5 minutes to walk 1 east-west block. Obviously more time if you%26#39;re stopping to look in shop windows or take photos!

20 north-south blocks (roughly) = 1 mile.

The FAQ page on this very question:

That%26#39;s very helpful, thank you! I didn%26#39;t realize hopstop would give me walking distances also, but I have already used it to print subway directions.... Very handy.

maps.google.com

will also give you the distance and even estimate the time for walking if you chose walking (vs car) from the drop down menu. You can just type

Doubletree Metropolitan hotel nyc to Times Square NYC.

I just tried google maps and it looks like we can walk to many places (now that I have the 20 block guideline). That%26#39;s terrific! I didn%26#39;t realize we would be so close to so many things. No more mapquest for me! Thx again.
