Since I was ';bawn'; and raised in New York, but haven%26#39;t been back in years I didn%26#39;t really do any touristy stuff to report, but did have some great food and other observations...
Stayed at 4 Points Sheraton Chelsea through Priceline - $95/night. A Steal at that price. Free wifi and a coffeemaker, hotel room was a nice standard Sheraton room. Staff is REALLY REALLY friendly. Since I spent all my time downtown, this location was perfect.(Posted full review)
I spent a lot of time catching up with old friends and on 2 separate requests, different friends asked to meet up at Cafe Angelique - 68 Bleeker St. Nice place to have a sandwich, a pastry or even a healthy breakfast and chat with your friends. Prices are reasonable, service was friendly. I%26#39;m a big omelette lover and this place really did the trick.
Havana Alma de Cuba 94 Christopher Street. GREAT Cuban food here, very reasonable, service is really friendly. The Sangria is especially good.
Rocco Pastry Shop - 243 Bleeker Great place to have a fresh pastry after dinner. Old School stuff, real cheesecake, fruit tarts, tons of stuff.
Tavern on Jane - Jane and 8th. Went here for St Pattys day, food was out of this world. They do basic tavern food with great twists. Reasonable pricing. Also, they have a ';quiet'; room if you request where you can hear your dining partner(s) talk. The place was crazy busy, lots of people at the bar and the table next to us was loaded with intoxicated Jersey girls who were not quite aware of how loud they were. Even, so, loved this place.
The Malibu Diner 163 w 23rd St. Because NYC never sleeps I stayed out later than usual and woke up too late to make a 11am deadline for breakfast. (remember, I%26#39;m a big omelette man) so the front desk at the hotel directed me here because they serve breakfast 24 hrs a day and it%26#39;s not Dennys! Great breakfast here! Also, they have some very interesting omelettes, beyong the usual Denver and Cheese. Service is A1 and you can get away under $15 and come away satisfied.
Other Stuff...
You guys take St Patricks Day way too seriously.
Love the TVs in the cabs. But can someone please tell me between 12 midnight and 5am who are all the cabbies on the phone with? Do they all just call each other?
Also the JetBlue terminal at JFK is awesome. Free wifi and better than average food choices. Also, enough seating!
VERY simple to get to NYC by train. Even did it during rush hour with my big a** suitcase. 10 bucks for the trip, no problem.
Can%26#39;t wait to get back!

That%26#39;s freakin%26#39; awesome!
Congrats on a successful visit and thanks for the happy recap.
Glad you enjoyed two of my lesser-known faves: Tavern on Jane and Malibu Diner.

Oh, I don%26#39;t know, call this a wild and crazy hunch, but perhaps they%26#39;re talking to relatives and friends in other countries in other times zones where it is not 3 AM?
;o)

I enjoyed your report and restaurant overviews. You went to some places that I%26#39;d definitely be interested in trying. (Not that I can get them all in!) :D
Glad you had a good time--thanks for posting!
Incidentally, as you saw in Tavern on Jane, a lot of those people drinking and shouting and engaging in un-ironic high-fives and whatnot because they know someone who knows someone whose great-great-uncle is 1/8th Irish are suburbanites, who descend upon the city on Saturdays and holidays like St. Patrick%26#39;s Day, leaving the rest of us cowering in our homes and covering our mouths from the clouds of Axe Body Spray:
