My husband and I are looking at driving from New York to San Fran. Can any suggest the best route to go, we have plenty of time , around 3 weeks or more. Also any recommendations on cheap car or van rentals. Are there plenty of caravan parks or cheap but clean motels along the way? We are trying to find out if it would be better to hire a car and stay in motels or hire a van and stay in van parks? Any ideas?
Also what would be the best time of year to do this?
thanks!

Hi Rockgypsy,
Well, the most direct route is I80, but that is not necessarily the best or most interesting. Have you been to the US before? What do you want to see the most? What are your interests, cities or National Parks? Three weeks is not as long as you might think when you are covering so much ground.
Personally, I think it would be easier and cheaper to rent a car as opposed to an RV (recreational vehicle). The car will be smaller and easier to drive and park, especially in big cities. Remember you will be driving on the ';wrong side'; of the road. You will get better gas mileage, also. There are zillions of cheap and clean motels along the way. The chain-franchise motels such as Super 8, Best Western, Comfort Inn, Red Roof Inn, etc are everywhere. You can get one of these for an average of $60-$80 per night. RV parks and campgrounds (I believe this is what you mean by caravan parks) are fewer in number and harder to find (although not that hard), but with a good GPS or research before you leave, that shouldn%26#39;t be a problem.
If you give more specific information about what you would like to see, I will give you more suggestions, as will others, I%26#39;m sure.
