Its my wifes 40th birthday on New Years Day, and I know she would love to come to New York.

Whilst I have some reservations about the weather in December/January and travelling with kids aged 6 and 8 as its something she would like to do, I plan to surprise her with a 3/4 day visit.

First thing I need to suss out is a location to stay in. I plan to do main touristy things so need to be in a good, central location. I also need to bear in ming the weak pound against the dollar, so whilst my normal budget would have been 拢100 per night that wont get me as far as it would have at other times in the past.

The pound is at, what, 1.4 right now? So a room for four of you for $140 a night on New Year%26#39;s? Have you thought about coming a week later, when the hordes of New Year%26#39;s tourists have gone and hotel rooms stop being insanely expensive?

Give her the present on her birthday with all the

info you have gathered and make the trip for

slightly later. Because so many people come for the

week between Christmas and New Year%26#39;s as the previous

poster said the prices are insane that week but do

tend to dive right after the first of the year.

Because of public transportation almost anywhere in

Manhattan is convenient. You are usually only talking about a 10-15 minute subway ride.

I agree if you%26#39;re thinking of coming for New Year%26#39;s Eve in order to be here on her birthday, it%26#39;s a really bad time to find affordable accomodation. Under the best of circumstances, $140/night for a room for 4 people is hard to find in Man. If you come ON her birthday, you%26#39;ll spend most of the day travelling. If you come just after the New Year weekend, like Jan. 4 or beyond, you%26#39;ll see some much better hotel prices. I also wonder whether it would be possible to leave the kids home with family which will make it a very different kind of trip that you might both enjoy more. The kids are young to be here at a time when it%26#39;s generally cold and not very comfortable walking around. It%26#39;s also easier to find hotel deals in a room for 2 vs. 4. Just some things to think about.

If you really want to do this, think about coming on Dec. 26 for 4 nights or after Jan. 4. It%26#39;s probably too early now to see best rates for that time period.
