My husband and I will be travelling from Australia in September. We really do not want to drive in New York City so will catch a cab into the city from the airport. When we are leaving the city we plan to drive from New York City of Los Angeles. Any tips on where to stay in Manhatten that is close to a National Car rental agency and also within very easy distance to get onto a freeway to leave the city would be appreciated. Or alternative ways to leave the city and pick up a rental car
Driving in New York City
You want to drive to Los Angeles? W O W !
Driving in New York City
I know that Aussies love to drive but driving from NYC is a bit much. Have you priced what it will cost to rent the car one way? I think sorting that first will tell you whether renting from a Manhattan location or an airport location makes more sense. I think you%26#39;ll find the cost is just prohibitive. I hope you have a few weeks to do this.
It%26#39;s totally unnecessary to spend your time near a National car rental outlet. Wherever you stay, you can get transportation to the car rental. I suggest you concentrate on finding a hotel in an area you will enjoy and that%26#39;s in your budget. If you want to tell us who you are (how many, ages etc.) and your budget, we may be able to help.
There are a number of rental car offices in New York
City. Is there a reason you picked National Only.
If you know where you are staying look at the National
web site get all the addresses in Manhattan and then
do a mapquest search from one to the other.
One thing to look for, I always found renting a car
in Manhattan to be more expensive than if you pick
it up in the suburbs. Just be aware. For your trip
which must be for a long time if you are going to
Los Angeles it may not make a difference, but I have
found differences in the same company of up to $20
per day.
Once you have your hotel repost this question about
leaving the city and where you are heading and we
can give you some tips.
Wow you are driving to LA.
I%26#39;m so envious of this cross-country road trip of yours -- it should be marvelous! (especially if you don%26#39;t stay on just the major highways)
It may not make sense to rent a car in NYC or the immediate environs. For example, if you%26#39;re planning on heading to Washington, DC -- where driving %26amp; parking are no more pleasant and about as pricey as here -- you might be better off taking a train or bus there [public transportation is excellent all along the Boston-NYC-DC route) and then picking up the rental car.

Have fun! And if you%26#39;d like an extra driver, I%26#39;m available :-)
Are you visiting Sedona and the Grand Canyon? Chicago? Rocky Mountains? I%26#39;m curious!
You could take the train from Penn Station to Newark Airport and rent a car there. We did that once when we drove from NYC to Ohio.
1. If you can drive in Sydney, you can drive in NYC.
2. Cabs from JFK or Newark can be very expensive, while trains are cheap and easy.
3. Renting a car outside of NYC -- say in New Jersey -- is often lower cost than in NYC, even from the same company.
Do Not rent at the airport. I thnk the drive would be a fun idea. it is something I%26#39;ve allways wanted to do. This country has alot of great cities and small towns.
We have driven across the country one way twice now, not a problem and the one way drop off fee is only around $200 not expensive at all. We ususally take about two weeks to drive coast to coast
Have just got back from the Grand Canyon last week, did a short trip from LA to Grand Canyon and then up through Cameron and into Utah and then to Vegas and back to LA. We have been so lucky have had 5 trips to your wonderful country and have driven through 46 states now. Totally addicted.
