NY City to Vermont and back - best place to hire car?

Although I have driven in the rural US before, I am reluctant to try and drive out of Manhattan - and back.

Would it be best take a bus to, say, Laguardia Airport and then hire a car and drive to Vermont?

(The advantage of is is that airport car desks are always manned)

Or is there somewhere in the suburbs (in the right direction) where cars can be hired? If, so where?

We will be setting out on a Sunday morning which could have a bearing on the choice.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated. I note that other contributors have made the point that it is less expensive to hire cars in the suburbs than mid-town.

On a Sunday morning, especially early, there%26#39;s not much traffic in Manhattan so you could easily rent in the city and drive out. The real issue imo is price which is affected both by where you pick up the car AND where you intend on returning it. If you plan on dropping it back at an airport, it MIGHT be cheaper to rent it from that same airport. LGA is not nec. a good option b/c some car rental places require you to be arriving at LGA to rent there. (it prevents NYC residents from getting a cheaper rate by going there ;(( ) If you intend on returning it say in Boston, you may not have a lot of options. Some suburban locations may not allow 1 way rentals. So tell us:

where you%26#39;re staying in Manhattan

where you intend returning the car

how long you plan on having it and if you leave immediately at the end of the road trip.

It is less expensive to not rent in the city BUT

if you are already in Manhattan you do not want to

try to get back to the airport to rent a car and then drive back into the city, based on your comments just to save a few dollars.

Do you know where you are staying and do you have

a preferred rental agency.

1. Most of the major companies will have offices

that will be open on Sunday morning.

2. getting out of the city and back in is very easy

so do not let that bother you.

We could lay out a quick exit and return route

once we knew where you are starting from.

I have made that drive north many times and you

will not find it difficult.
