Camping outside NYC

We%26#39;re looking to tent-camp outside the NYC area and are having trouble finding inexpensive transportation. Any suggestions?

Found this thread on a camping forum with some good info about getting to Bear Moutain/Harriman State Park area by train or bus.

Unless you consider sleeping in a refrigerator box in Central Park camping, there really is no camping anywhere within the five boros. I%26#39;ve checked the NYC Parks site and have discovered that the two nearest campgrounds are at Harriman State Park [Bear Mountain] and at Hither Hills [Montauk].

Both are very different. Harriman State Park is hilly with great hiking. HIther Hills is the Montauk Beach experience. Reservations would be a must. Here is the site where you can reserve.

I think you really have to be more exact as to where and when you are looking to do this. There are many camping sites along the Jersey Shore or Long Island but you need to decide where, when before you can get to the how.
