Safety ay night

Hi,

I know this will seem a stupid and maybe even insulting question to some but I am a 20yr old female and am coming to new york new alone next month and wanted to know if it was safe to go out at night.

I want to do things in manhantten at night and so would mean coming back to where I%26#39;m staying at night. I%26#39;m staying in brooklyn (bed-stuy) and every one keeps oooing and aarring about it not being safe.

People sy the same things about my neigbourhood all the time and I get annoyed because you can be safe if you hold yourself correctly. Anyway, would anyone say it was perfectly safe for me to get the subway at night and walk about a block to my hostel?

Thanks

Safety ay night

Here we go.....

Safety ay night

Bed Stuy has some gentrified, safe and beautiful sections, and great subway access, but there are also pockets that are sketchy and creepy.

What%26#39;s the name of the hostel? What%26#39;s the address. There are many discussions on this forum about illegal rentals and sketchy lodging situations in Bed Stuy....Try typing ';Bed Stuy hostel'; in the search box here.

Be that as it may, it sounds like you have street smarts so you know what to do and not do, and how to reduce the likelihood of being a crime vicitim anywhere, in ';safe'; or ';unsafe'; areas. I wouldn%26#39;t worry about you. :o)

I think staying in Bed Stuy at what is likely an illegal rental or hostel is a really bad idea. If you do a text search on the forum for bed-stuy you%26#39;ll find many other posters would agree. Here are 2

If you want the most accurate info, you%26#39;d have to tell us exactly where in the area you%26#39;d be staying and how far from the subway stop and which one.

Listen to the experts. Bed-stuy is changing and I

don%26#39;t know how you found it. I live in Brooklyn

and all I can say is if you were my daughter under

these circumstances no way you would stay there. I

know budget is probably an issue but if you plan

to be in manhattan at night then try to find someplace

in manhattan.

It%26#39;s lafayette international hostel, I%26#39;ve read alot of reviews for it and nobody seems to say anthing about it being sketchy or anything like that. I%26#39;m only going to be there for a week. The nearest subway is bedford-nostrand which is about 100m so i wouldnt be walking down backstreets or anything.

Thanks

Bedford Styvesant has some amazing brownstones and is indeed rapidly gentrifying. That said, it is a block by block situation. My son and his girlfriend lived there for about six months and it was generally OK. However, he did keep late hours and was once mugged [robbed but not hurt] at about 3:00 AM.

I believe that if you come home before midnite, you%26#39;d be safe, but there are some pretty sketchy areas where you may not feel secure. I would rethink this one. You may be able to get a comparable B%26amp;B in Ditmas Park. It would be a generally safer area than Bed Stuy.

Good luck

Just so you know, the subway that is one block away is the G train, which runs between Brooklyn and Queens. If you%26#39;re planning on traveling between the hostel and Manhattan, you%26#39;re in for an 11-block hike to the A/C stop at Nostrand and Fulton, or a transfer to the A/C at the Hoyt/Schermerhorn stop or to the F at Bergen. Not the end of the world, but just a heads-up.

Off the G train? You鈥檙e not in a good area and that train is unpredictable at best outside of rush hour鈥?I鈥檝e waited for an hour for it and finally given up several times. I would advise you not to do this.

Last week I was visiting a friend in Bed-Stuy (in a better area then you鈥檒l be) and I got out of my car service on the wrong block and had to walk a bit (this was just after dark) 鈥?as a strange, white woman I attracted a lot of attention: cat calls, comments, etc. It was pretty aggressive. I reacted well and I arrived just fine so to some extent you鈥檙e right about this having a lot to do with how you carry yourself and how street smart you are.

My worry for you is that you鈥檒l be mugged by some board kids who鈥檇 rush you from behind, push you down and take everything on you before you even knew what happened (that鈥檚 a pretty common set up). And that can happen at 9am on a Sunday morning as easily as it could late at night.

Actually, I%26#39;d take the G to the L train at Metroplitan-Lorimer.

(Especially now that the Metropolitan-Lorimer station is so SAFE and WELL LIT!! %26lt;--just a little private joke bwn me and LotusPath. Winky, winky.)

Be that as it may, yeah, the G train is the scrawny, runt orphan of the subway system. Too bad, b/c it gets more used every year.

Again, I%26#39;m not too worried about your safety, but this sounds like a pain in the butt. Is this cancellable? What%26#39;s your budget?

Why are you staying at that hostel, there are hostels in Manhattan which are MUCH more convenient and in a safer area. As others said, Bed Stuy is sort of a block by block thing.

But simply due to convenience sake, this is a really bad decision.
