We are visiting the first week of May, this is our second trip to NYC, mother and daughter trip. We are staying at RCA again but on this visit we would like to venture to other neighborhoods not just midtown. We enjoy walking and will do a lot of that, are any of the neighborhoods away from midtown such as Greenwich Village and Soho walkable. I would also like to take buses since I enjoy seeing things along the way. Does the number 5 bus south on 5th Ave. end up in Greenwich Village and approximately how long would it take.
Thanks!
Taking Public Transit
HopStop is such a treasure; you can find directions %26amp; distances for making your way around via public transit, by foot, and taxi (with estimate of cab fare).

Thanks for the hopstop information, worth taking our laptop with us, I believe RCA has wireless internet. What a great website, we need something like this in Toronto.
Hop Stop is very easy. So is the subway! It%26#39;s an amazing system and very easy to use and very inexpensive! I would highly recommend getting a 7 day pass and riding the subway anywhere you want to go. Buses take so much longer and why waste the little time you have in NYC?
Well, a bus does give you sights and perspectives you miss by traveling only underground.
Booky, have you seen this article from the NY Times about sightseeing via our City buses (with almost no transfers required), ';Hop On and Off, Just The Way The Natives Do';? I think it%26#39;s terrific:

And you gotta take the subway, just for the experience.

I%26#39;d say that 98% of Manhattan is easily walkable. You could walk the entire length of Broadway if you so desired.
In fact, these guys did and made a special about it. Great doc. I%26#39;d highly reco watching it before you visit.

Walking tours are popular. You can type ';walking tours'; in the forum search box.

And don%26#39;t forget to have that reflexology at the end of the day!

Thanks for all your great suggestions, I can%26#39;t wait to go over them all when I get home from work this evening.
Getting around Manhattan with the MTA city buses is great.
Cheap, runs often, many routes getting you anywhere.
For an overview of routes, I would recommend using the MTA Bus map instead of a journey planner who doesn%26#39;t show the whole system.
This map here:

can be obtained for free in coloured print at any Subway station booth, just ask for it.
