Im getting married in Central Park and would love to have my reception in a restaurant in Little Italy. There will be a few children also so a restaurant with an outdorr eating area would be preferable. Can anyone please recommend a few ideal locations?
Wedding reception in a restaurant in Little Italy
The restaurants in Little Italy are by and large tourist traps. They can be fun if you approach them in an ironic fashion, but I%26#39;m not sure a wedding reception would be the opportunity to do that. Could you tell us a little about the atmosphere you%26#39;re after and what sorts of prices you%26#39;re looking to pay?

If you%26#39;re choosing Little Italy b/c you think the food is better there, it%26#39;s not the case. If you just like the feel of the area, fine. I%26#39;m not sure I get the connection b/w kids and eating outside. In restaurants here, outside doesn%26#39;t make it any more kid friendly. Il Cortile in Little Italy has a glass enclosed garden room and the food%26#39;s not bad.
Some other ideas:
Landmarc is near the south end of Central Park in the Time Warner building and is a kid friendly place serving Italian and steak.
Carmine%26#39;s with 2 locations, one in Times Square and the other on the upper west side serves family style and is kid friendly. Tony%26#39;s Di Napoli is similar and some say better.
Gigino in Wagner Park is downtown with outdoor dining with views of the Statue of Liberty.
Well, we%26#39;re after something informal. I called it a wedding reception but it will be a meal with close friends and family. We would like it to be family welcoming and have the feel of a family run business. We would also like to have a good drink while there. As there will be children there it%26#39;s important that children are accepted and a certain amount of tolerance for them is given! Price isnt a great issue but we dont want the cuisine to be too fancy or over the top. In summary we would like a friendly restaurant where we can have fun and not be restricted from a little partying.
Yes, I have to concur - outdoor tables in New York are not the same as in other cities. They are not understood to be playgrounds for kids. Often they are on the sidewalk in front of the restaurant, and children getting up from their seats will not be appreciated.
Do let us know what kind of food and budget you%26#39;re looking for, and we will be happy to recommend some restaurants that will suit your needs admirably.
I think any of the places I mentioned would fit the description you gave. In case you don%26#39;t know
menupages.com
is an excellent website to do some research. They have a features menu where you can choose kid friendly and all the places I listed are kid friendly. I don%26#39;t know what time the ceremony is or whether you%26#39;re looking for lunch or dinner. Depending on the size of your group, you might prefer a private room or area.
Arte Cafe is an Italian restaurant on the upper west side that has a large table in a back room that%26#39;s a bit private that might also work. It doesn%26#39;t have the charm of the Little Italy neighborhood or a view or garden room though.
I have two suggestions, on opposite sides of the island.
The first is Monte%26#39;s, a small family run old-fashioned Italian restaurant in Greenwich Village. They serve wonderful Italian food at reasonable prices. They also have a room upstairs that (depending on how many people you have coming) might make sense for your party. Plenty of people bring their children to monte%26#39;s, but be aware that while the service is not fussy, and children are certainly present, they are also expected not to run around or be unreasonably noisy.

The other is my favorite pizza place in New York, V%26amp;T%26#39;s, up in Morningside Heights near Columbia University. While they make my favorite pizza, they have all sorts of Italian food, and their pasta is also wonderful. There are usually children all over the place, and children will be tolerated at a higher noise level than at Monte%26#39;s. It%26#39;s an old fashioned red-checkered tablecloth place. I held my husband%26#39;s post-marathon party there after his second marathon, so I know they%26#39;ll set up for larger parties.

I can%26#39;t speak to the bar service at either of these places. I know Monte%26#39;s has a full bar, but I can%26#39;t tell you anything about the prowess of their bartender when it comes to mixing drinks, as I only drink scotch straight up. V%26amp;T%26#39;s I believe has a stocked bar, but again, I can%26#39;t speak to the quality of their cocktails.
Good luck.
