Your New York Part 2

I did this once before (hence the Part 2 bit) where I nabbed the questions from London%26#39;s Evening Standard%26#39;s ES magazine. These questions are from a BBC site where they ask celebs these questions but the questions are on London - hopefully I%26#39;ve replaced London for New York in the questions below but just in case if it says London in the question, it means New York :).





So, just as a bit of fun (and it might be useful to future visitors), here%26#39;s your chance to be a celeb and answer these questions. As usual answer as few or as many as you wish.

Favorite Building: Exterior - Chrysler Bldg



Interior - Woolworth Bldg





Most Hated Bldg: Verizon monolith by the Brooklyn Bridge.





Best View: The view of downtown Manhattan from either DUMBO waterfront or the Brooklyn Heights promenade.





Favorite Open Space: Prospect Park





Favorite Pub: The Gate in Park Slope





Day Off: Disc golf in the AM at Propsect Park. Riis Park beach at 4:00 followed by a pastrami sandwich at Mill Basin Deli.





Where would I take a visitor: Bklyn, duh.





Worst journey: Just a general rant about the traffic jams that can pop up anywhere at any time. I%26#39;ve been held up for hours at a stuck drawbridge, a jumper on the GWB, accidents, the West Indian Day Parade and any other number of tie-ups. Yes, we have traffic jams after midnite.





Personal NY Landmark: I love the tiny retractile bridge over the Gowanus on Carroll Street. I also love the Grand Army Plaza Arch and the Montalk Club.





Favorite NY Film or Book: Motherless Brooklyn [Letham], The Island at the Center of the World [Shorto], Up in the Old Hotel [Mitchell], The WPA guide to NY.





Time Period: I%26#39;d love to see how the island looked during the period of Dutch rule [see The Island at the Center of the Earth]



Your New York Part 2


Your favourite building? Ditto -- Chrysler exterior, Woolworth interior





Most hated building? The Verizon bldg. is a real blight, but my most hated is the Met Life (nee Pan Am) Bldg.





Best view in New York? North from Top of the Rock





Favourite open space? Central Park





Most interesting shop? Zabar%26#39;s





Favourite pub, bar or restaurant? Allstate (unfortunately, gone)





Most memorable night out? Offhand, listening to Pavarotti in Central Park. A storm had been predicted, but not a drop of rain fell. The place was empty, and Pavarotti was glorious.





How would you spend your ideal day off in New York? I live here, so my ideal day would be spent with friends, eating and drinking.





Where would you take a visitor to New York? Central Park





The worst journey you%26#39;ve had to make in New York? Home on Sept. 11, 2001.





Your personal New York landmark? Tough. Brooklyn Bridge maybe.

Which time period in New York, past or future, would you like to go to? Early 60鈥檚 before they demolished the Singer Building and Pennsylvania Station.

Most hated building? Penn Station





Best view in New York? On a boat, between South tip of Manhattan. 360 degrees of beauty.

Pub/Bar: Spuyten Duyvil, Williamsburg Restaurant: Blue Hill





Most memorable night out? My wedding: Ceremony in the Marble Cemetery + parade through the East Village with ukelele accompaniment %26amp; singing, tamborine, whistles and bells, with pot luck reception in an old Ukranian ballroom on 2nd Avenue, dancing all night, walking home with my wife with a glass of beer at 3 AM, open container laws be damned!





How would you spend your ideal day off in New York?



Sleep in, lunch at Union Square farmers market (fresh bread %26amp; Bobolink cheese), bike around the city. Drinks in Williamsburg, then tacos at the Mexican deli on Avenue A b/w 13th %26amp; 14th.





Where would you take a visitor to New York?



Tenement Museum %26amp; LES walk, followed by a walk in DUMBO. Drinks at DBA in East Village and dinner at Lil%26#39; Frankies.





The worst journey you%26#39;ve had to make in New York?



Rental car Friday afternoon drive to and through the Holland Tunnel, summertime, any year.





Your personal New York landmark?



Williamsburg Bridge





Your favourite fictional New York?



A mixture of Woody Allen movie moments





Favourite New York film, book or documentary?



Film: The Naked City



Book: Up In The Old Hotel by Joseph Mitchell



Documentary: Does Taxi Cab Confessions count?!?





Which time period in New York, past or future, would you like to go to?



A walk around the late 1800%26#39;s, Lower East Side.




I%26#39;m a licensed sightseeing guide, so I know the city fairly well.





Favorite building: original GE HQ, at 575 Lexington %26amp; 51.



Most hated: STILL the Huntington Hartford.



Best view: from the SI Ferry or Waterway Ferry approaching Manhattan.



Favorite open space: Bike lane next to the West Side Highway.



Most Interesting shop: Takashimaya!



Most favorite pub or rest: torn between Carnegie Club and Maui Taco.



Most memorable night out: Tomita at Battery Park, 1986.



Ideal day off: Yankees vs. Mets game.



Where to take a visitor: my personal walking tour of the Battery Park - City Hall area.



Worst Journey: taking tourists to the WTC in 2002 and trying not to cry.
