We%26#39;ve been looking to rent a place on Lake Cayuga for mid-June.
After really doing our homework and after many discussions, we%26#39;ve honed in on a few preferences:
We want something within a 1/2 drive of Ithaca (the closer the better)
We%26#39;d like something private, or at least as private as possible.
We don%26#39;t mind rustic (in fact, the more trees, the better), and modern is fine too, as long as it%26#39;s fairly secluded.
We don%26#39;t need have a boat so that%26#39;s not a requirement, but being on or near the water is a top priority.
We only need to sleep three, and sleeping porches are fine.
It must be clean and safe.
We would like to pay between $900 and $1000 for seven days.
We%26#39;d be delighted if we could find something level (I know these are scarce) or something that we could drive down/up to. Stairs are not easy on my knees.
We%26#39;ve looked on HomeAway, VRBO, Vacationrentals, and Craigs List.
Does anyone else have any other suggestions?
We definitely do not want a B%26amp;B, a hotel, or a hostel.
Thanks for any help you can give us.
Also, how far of a drive is it to Niagra Falls? Is it advisable to make it in a long one-day trip, or should we ';spring'; for an extra hotel night?
Thanks so much!!
Finding a rustic private cabin/cottage on the lake
There is a place called ';Kingstown Beach'; in Trumansburg that has cabins and yurts on Cayuga for rent. They see a bit close together, but thought I%26#39;d send the lead your way. Have you checked classified ads in The Ithaca Journal?
RE: Niagara. I would definitely spring for a hotel in Niagara and stay overnight. My best guess is that it%26#39;s about a 4+ hr drive to get there from Ithaca.
Finding a rustic private cabin/cottage on the lake
Thanks for responding. Yes, I%26#39;ve been checking the Journal on a weekly basis without success.
I checked out Kingston but the cottages are coupled together. But, thanks for the lead.
I%26#39;ll keep looking.
Try Housing Solutions www.housingsolutions.com, it is a local web site with listings for assorted things in the Ithaca area.
The drive to Niagara Falls is maybe 3 hours tops, depending on which side of the lake you start from and if you are going to Canadian/American Side and if there is bridge traffic up there.
Level is very unusual on Cayuga Lake. The west side tends to have very steep drop offs. the east side has more %26#39;level%26#39; areas in general.
Check the Cayuga Wine trail web site, some of the wineries rent out properties- I think Kanpp is one that does.
Thanks so much for your help.
Despite my definitive statement that I definitely did not want a B%26amp;B, we stumbled upon Home Again (the Mackenzie-Child%26#39;s home). We fell in love immediately, so we%26#39;ve booked our stay with them (and can%26#39; wait).
Since we%26#39;ll be in Kings Ferry, we will probably leave early one morning and drive to the falls for the day and drive back that night. It will be long day, but it will be worth it just to see them.
Can%26#39;t wait to come to Ithaca. It%26#39;s definitely ';our cup of tea.';
Oh, got it, I was kind of wondering a bit since I didn%26#39;t think there was a B%26amp;B at the Mackenzie-Childs factory building.
The Mackenzie-Childs factory, shop and restaurant are just north of Aurora which is a charming village.
The Home Again/ Victora %26amp; Richard Mackenzie-Child%26#39;s former residence and sometimes occupied by their daughter %26amp; son-in-law is in King Ferry. The house is quirky and quaint, a huge farmhouse covered every square inch inside and out with potttery, decoratations and other artwork. It would be fun to stay there.
You might want to swing a trip up to the Aurora facility to see how different it is from the farm house now that the M-C family has sold it and most of the patterns that they had originally created. They are totally split and the Mackenzie-Childs family has has pretty much sold off the rights to their name to be used for business enterprises.
Plus, there really isn%26#39;t much to do in King Ferry. Aurora is at least cute. ;)
