in new york for 8 hours - what to do?

I will be travelling to Europe end of May and have an 11 hour stop over in NY. Taking into account travel time from Newark airport and back, I figure about 8 hours in NYC. Any suggestions on what to do to get a taste of the city? My 1st time there, very excited. Will be there from early afternoon to mid evening. I%26#39;m thinking Times Square and central park, I think I%26#39;ll leave out the Statue of Liberty, since it might take up too much time. More just want to soak in the atmosphere and see the heart of the city. ANy suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Also, what would be the most efficient and not too costly way of getting from Newark to Manhatten wthout too much difficulty. Thanks!!!!
