Hi everyone. I will be traveling with my partner to New York in late September. We have done up an itinerary but would like some comments as to whether we have allowed enough time/too much time etc to places (and if you can see any great things we%26#39;ve missed!).
We are traveling from Australia and are unlikely to be able to afford traveling here again for many years so we would like to see as much as possible. We are both in our mid-twenties.

One of the absolute best things to do in NYC is to just walk around and let it roll over you. Your itinerary is mostly fine, but may leave you gasping for air.
I do have questions about Monday. Walking over the Brooklyn Bridge after Katz%26#39;s deli may leave you gasping anyway. Did you know that Coney Island is on the far side of Brooklyn, about 45 minutes from the Bridge? Brooklyn is HUGE. I%26#39;d concentrate on an area such as DUMBO or Park Slope rather than running around the boro.
Also, Washington is a heck of a day trip. It takes about four to five hours to get there from the City. If you do take that as a day trip, you%26#39;ll be pooped - spry 20 year olds or not. The next day may seem like Mao%26#39;s Long March.
I%26#39;d use the itinerary as more of an outline than a check-box list of things you ';need'; to see. Sometimes, overplanning is as dangerous as underplanning. Make sure that you save enough time to leave the guidebook in the hotel, put on your walking shoes and just go exploring. Someplace like Central Park comes to mind, but I see that this great space slid off your itinerary. Don%26#39;t be a slave to the guidebooks and itineraries. Take time to be yourselves and relax in this great city.
I think your itinerary is overly ambitious. Also I would drop the trip to Washington.....I think your money could be better spent on other things.. Washington IS worth seeing....but you cant see anything in just a day.
I would also drop Coney Island......IMHO just not much to see.
I%26#39;ve only glanced at your itinerary, but it looks like a checklist of photo ops. Keep a list of attractions by neighborhood, and then just go explore. Spend a day in Central Park just tossing a frisbee around, hanging with the locals.
If you%26#39;ve got 11 nights, you can easily take a couple of days to see Washington. Just don%26#39;t try it as a day trip.
Drop the idea of the day trip to Philly and the Hamptons, and spend 2 nights in Washington, 9 nights in NYC. Washington has so much to offer, and it takes 4 hours on a bus to get there. Amtrak is a nicer ride and a bit quicker, but not cheap.
Otherwise, you have done a good job of organizing your itinerary by neighbourhood, which is the best way to do it. Make sure you check out the Cathedral of St John the Divine when you are up at Tom%26#39;s Diner - it%26#39;s just down the street.
Don%26#39;t waste time going to Coney Island, as Mel said. Stick to another, closer area of Brooklyn like Park Slope, which is lovely. Coney Island%26#39;s Astroland is now closed, so you could head there for a ride on the Cyclone, but it%26#39;s not worth it IMO.
If the line at Magnolia is too long, there are now locatiions in Midtown and the Upper West Side.
Thanks everyone - I think we are a little over-ambitious and better sit down and work out what we can cull!! Just wish it wasn%26#39;t sooo expensive to get to New York - there%26#39;s just so much to see
I second the much too ambitious! Do revise - check a map and group geographically. The Hampton%26#39;s in September is lovely if you own/rent a cottage house there - really not much to see for a tourist.
