jacket brands for New York at christmas

This may seem like a silly post but i will be in New York at christmas. I live in Australia and it does not get cold were I live so i%26#39;m just looking for a little bit of help with some brands, I have come across, and if they will be suitable for the conditions at christmas. Currently we are looking at Columbia and North Face, I know there are lots of differents styles etc just wondering what people%26#39;s thoughts are on either brand????? Any help or ideas will be appreciated Thanks J

I don%26#39;t think I have ever looked at the brand name of any winter coat I have ever bought in my entire life. If the garment was of an appropriate size, style, quality, material, and warmth, I bought it; if it wasn%26#39;t, I didn%26#39;t, regardless of the name of the company on the label.

It depends on what style jacket you like. Something like the Columbia Whirlibird might be a nice choice for you, because there is a liner that seperates. So the coat can be used as a rain coat or fleece, which would probably be practical for at home, or together as a winter coat. This may not be the %26#39;look%26#39; that the locals sport, but if you aren%26#39;t into the %26#39;fitting in w/the locals%26#39; vibe than I think that (or something similar) would be a great choice.

Cabelas has an assortment of reasonably priced and well made garments:

Thanks for your advice have checked the webiste listed and it has given us ideas and it was also good to see a price comparison - it would be much easier to buy our jackets here and the price comparisons with cabelas given conversion rates etc are good.

Also just wanted to clarify for Green WHite and Blue - I was giving brand names because we really have no idea and these are the brands that are avilable to us in Queensland. I wasn%26#39;t asking to be label concious etc as you have implied. Being prepared and warm is our intention!

Go to an outdoor store and tell them what you want to use it for. There are several places having Easter sales right now (including Paddy Pallin and Mountain Designs).

When I went last year, I bought my coat from www.eddiebauer.com. It%26#39;s US based but they deliver to Australia.

My one piece of advice irrespective of brand or price is to buy something that covers you backside. It really will keep you warmer while out and about.

gidgee, if you really want to blend in with the natives, buy North Face. I was there in February and I%26#39;d swear that NF must have a monopoly on winter coats - they were everywhere!
