Staying in Jersey City -- exploring NYC...

I have two questions that I%26#39;m hoping to get some help with... First, a little background on where and why we%26#39;ll be staying where we are....

We will be in NYC - actually staying in Jersey City since the conference that my wife is attending is footing the bill for the hotel. It%26#39;s a nice place - the Hyatt Regency Jersey City. The best part seems to be that it is literally across the street from the Exchange Place PATH station.

Here is my first question... Is it possible to buy and use two cards for our stay in NYC? One would be a card for the PATH system and the other would be a card for the NYC subway system.

I%26#39;m picturing us using the PATH to get to the World Trade Center subway station in Manhattan and then being able to use the NYC subway system from there...

I know that the PATH (panynj.gov/COMMUTINGTRAVEL/鈥ares.html) has a ';SmartLink 7-day pass - unlimited** for 7 days'; for $18 and that the MTA (www.mta.info/metrocard/mcgtreng.htm#unlimited) has an 7-Day unlimited for $25..... Is this what we should do? We%26#39;ll actually be in town for 8 days.

The last question I have is about transportation from the airport (LGA) to the hotel in Jersey City. I%26#39;ve read quite a bit about the options available and I guess my question is this: should we take a cab or hire a car? The reason I ask has to do with our destination (Jersey City) not being in the same state as our origin... Is that a potential problem when taking a cab? I see that Dial 7 will take us there for about $67 + tolls and tips.... I assume a cab would be less expensive... But maybe not?

Thanks in advance for your help!

A New York City taxi is not required to leave the city limits and most drivers would refuse to do so (and might not know how to get where you%26#39;re trying to go). I would book a car service.

I think I would do what you propose re: the subway and PATH.

Forgive me if you realize this already, but you can%26#39;t both use the same unlimited card. You%26#39;ll each need to buy your own

LivesInNewJersey - yes, realized that, but re-reading my post, I see how you could%26#39;ve thought that I was talking about getting ONLY two cards... We%26#39;ll get two each. Thanks for your post.

Crans - thanks for your confirmation. I hesitated to post the transportation question as the site is full of them, but nothing I read specifically addressed the cross-state issue.... either the cabs or the subway.

Thanks again... our trip isn%26#39;t until July, so we%26#39;ve lot%26#39;s of time to plan and try to get things right.

The 7 day passes seem to be your best bet. For transport from the airport, you can either book a car service or you could take a taxi into Manhattan to the PATH station downtown (~$35) and then just take the PATH train over which should save quite a bit.

If you don%26#39;t have piles of luggage or you are not too mobile, why not just take public transportation from LGA to the hotel?

Public transit to your locatin in Jersey is not easy, but here goes. Get a $10 metrocard from the newstand in the airport (you can share this card). Take the q33 bus to the E subway line, the E train to World Trade Center. There you can connect to the Path to your hotel. Time, about 2 hours, not easy of fun.
