Taking a train to Times Square from West Point

I will be visiting West Point and we%26#39;d like to take the train down to the city. My son says we catch the train in Garrison and take it to Grand Central Station and walk to Times Square.

Is this the correct stop to visit Times Square? Is it a long walk to Times Square from Grand Central Station?

Can anyone recommend a better stop or transfer?

Also, and this is the most critical question, any pizza recommendations in walking distance from Grand Central (or wherever the best stop should be)? :-)

Your son is correct. The Metro North Railroad, which stops at Garrison, terminates at Grand Central Terminal.

Is there a particular concern, or is just distance? Are you going to be pressed for time to get to a show or something?

If you%26#39;re worried about safety (and I%26#39;m guessing that%26#39;s a possibility b/c that%26#39;s usually what is behind questions about ';better'; and ';closer'; access to Times Square), please throw your concerns out the window. You will be safe and secure and surrounded by a gazillion tourists and residents walking around, 24 hours a day.

Check out a map. There are plenty online or you can get old-fashioned paper maps (and use a ruler) at a bookstore, or order them for FREE from AAA (automobile club.)

If you don%26#39;t want to walk the half mile to Times Square, you can use the #7 subway or the S shuttle train, which both go from GCT to Times Square. Or, you can take the M42 bus. Or you can take a taxi.

If you walk and it is before 5pm, you can enjoy a stop at the wonderful and beautiful main branch of the NY Public Library (it%26#39;s the famous ones with the lions in front.)

The subway and buses use MetroCards. Metro North does not. You need to buy a ticket for Metro North, and a MetroCard for the subway.

Thanks for the information. I was looking for the ';closest'; stop to Times Square, and .5 mile is no big deal. I didn%26#39;t want to hoof it for 2 miles if there was a transfer that could take us closer.

I%26#39;ve been browsing the threads and it looks like we%26#39;re going to try to hit John%26#39;s.

Thank you so much for your response.

While Garison is just accross the river from West Point it won%26#39;t be the most convient station unless you swim across the river. You will have to drive to either the Newberg-Beacon Bridge (10 miles north) to Beacon or the Bear Mountain Bridge (10 miles south) to Peekskill. Garison is a lovely station though, it ';played'; the Yonkers Train Station in Hello Dolly.

Of the two bridge crossings above, I actually prefer the Beacon one. More parking, more trains, easier dirve.

We ended up driving from WP to Garrison (it took about 15-20 min) and hopping the train from there. It was about a 65 minute ride into the city. We took another subway to Spring St. and had pizza at Lombardi%26#39;s, which definitely did NOT disappoint! We then took a subway back to Grand Central, then took another one to Times Square. It was a blast!

Can%26#39;t wait to go back!

Awesome! Thanks for the feedback. Sometimes we give advice about planes, trains and automobiles, and we never know what actually happened. So, again, your report is appreciated.

Glad to know you%26#39;ll be back!

Without getting into the age old discussion about who is the %26#39;real Ray%26#39;s Pizza%26#39; - I always recommend the Rays at 6th Ave and 11th St. I have been eating pizza at this location for the last 35 years. It has not changed very much and I still do not know of a better slice anywhere, (and I have tried quite a few)!

I will pass that along to my son who tries to sneak down into the city as much as possible. The next time I go visit, which won%26#39;t be till the fall, I will check it out. I am compiling a list of pizza places I would like to try. As of now, I only have 3 places - Grimaldi%26#39;s, John%26#39;s, and now Ray%26#39;s. Thanks!

My wife attended college in Highland Falls in the 60%26#39;s and used to go across the river to Peekskill to get the train to NYC...........

You can without crossing a bridge or though not direct to NY (you have to change in Secaucus) New Jersey Transit from Nanuet NY. I think 20 minutes south of West Point.

here is the link to NJ Transit.
