Broadway shows.....not the typical suggestions

Although this would be our first trip to NY and you would think that Lion King or Phantom would be the first choice to go see, what are some other suggestions for shows that one does not typically think of to go see and which ones should we stay away from? We are in our mid 40%26#39;s.

Anyone heard about the Rock of Ages musical that appears to have moved to Broadway. The reviews and clip I saw seems fun...but is it worth the money in the end?

Thanks for any suggestions.

Broadway shows.....not the typical suggestions

Well, what do you ';typically think of to go see';? I%26#39;m not trying to be snarky, but anything that%26#39;s on Broadway is ipso facto popular, so what exactly do you have in mind as a ';typical'; show?

In the Heights is the most inventive show on Broadway right now, and Avenue Q is very irreverent, if what you%26#39;re interested in is avoiding the big bombastic musicals like Wicked.

Broadway shows.....not the typical suggestions

Tattie - many 1st timers like yourself head for the %26#39;name%26#39; shows - that%26#39;s fine - however there are usually over 200 Broadway productions playing at any given time and as we routinely attend the theater in NYC and go for limited runs, off-Broadway or shows offered by the Manhattan Theater Club of which we are on their mailing list.

We also peruse www.broadwaybox.com.

We last saw the Marvelous Wonderettes and The American Plan, both excellent productions also very enjoyable and entertaining.

IMO, one does not have to always see first run shows to experience the magic which is Broadway - expand your horizons check out broadwaybox.com for some interesting productions being staged as we speak and take it from there.

Actually, we on the forum rarely reco Lion King, Mama Mia or Phantom.

We often reco Wicked, esp for families with pre-teens.

But frankly, we usually reco other things like

Musicals:

Avenue Q (probably our most recommended show on this forum.), In the Heights, South Pacific, Altar Boyz, Billy Elliot, and some reco Shrek. I%26#39;d reco Hair, esp if you sit in Orchestra or front Mezzanine.

Plays: right now it%26#39;s God of Carnage, there%26#39;s also August: Osage County, Waiting for Godot, Hedda Gabler,

On my list this spring are Toxic Avenger, Hedda Gabler, Godot and Distracted, and hopefully Carnage if I can still get discounted tix.

I was just looking for some other ideas besides the ones that first come to mind when you think of a broadway show. I have seen a travelling version of Wicked so I probably would pick something else that would be new to me. Phantom would probably put my hubby to sleep....he needs upbeat action.

I have not even heard of quite of few that are listed on broadway box.com so I am looking for yalls suggestions on the not as name recognized type shows.

Anyone heard or seen the Rock of Ages.....80%26#39;s music put into a musical?

Just in case... I watched a play at the Mint Theater last year...

It is off-broadway but if you are looking for something different it is an expirience. Seating goes right down to the stage with only a small space between row 1 and the area where the action takes place. You feel like oyu are part of the company, and I%26#39;ve always been amazed at how the actors and actresses can work while ignoring the audience (and not stepping on their feet). And during an intermission or afterwards, it%26#39;s not unusual for them and the director, playwright, etc. to come out and chat.

Tt is a unique expirience.

A few people saw Rock of Ages when it was playing off Broadway and liked it a lot. If you like 80%26#39;s rock music, then you should like it.

In the Heights is the best thing I%26#39;ve seen in a long time. There are quite a few straight plays (not musicals) right now including God of Carnage, Blithe Spirit, Exit the King, Reasons to be Pretty. Just depends on your tastes. South Pacific and West Side Story are revivals that have gotten excellent reviews.

%26lt;%26lt;Actually, we on the forum rarely reco Lion King, Mama Mia or Phantom.%26gt;%26gt;

I don%26#39;t guess it matters since we%26#39;ve already purchased four tickets to the LION KING, but my curiosity is getting the best of me. Why don%26#39;t you recommend this show?

Teach, maybe QB%26#39;s speaking for herself, but I often reco Lion King. I%26#39;ll reco Phantom if someone%26#39;s looking for a traditional musical, and Mamma Mia if they say they liked shows like Hairspray or Jersey Boys.

You should check out Off Broadway. The theaters are smaller and more intimate and the productions are usually not as commercial. It%26#39;s also cheaper.

Here%26#39;s a listing (with many reviews) of everything playing http://www.nytheatre.com/ both on and off broadway

Don%26#39;t know if you%26#39;re into dance but you may want to take a look at what the Joyce theater will be showing while you%26#39;re hear www.joyce.org

www.broadwaybox.com also lists all the shows and you can get discount codes there

%26gt;%26gt;yalls%26lt;%26lt;

Tattie - on brodawaybox.com just click on the name of the show and you will see all there is to know about the production - availability of tickets - a brief synopsis of the show etc.

Remember, everyone in NYC or vicinity has not seen EVERY show out there - sometime you just have to take a chance.

I subscribe to the New Yorker and New York magazines - both have play/show reviews and have online versions. However it all boils down to whether you believe a review or have the same likes as someone who has seen the show - we have been to shows with others, 2 of us really liked it - two did not.

So - check out some shows whilst you are in town or better yet do what we do - buy advance tickets through broadaybox/Ticketmaster.
